THE SOUTHERN STAY | SOUTHERN TRAVEL
Why Pensacola Is Still Cool
One mother, one daughter, and a 1977 houseboat that reminded us why the weirdest places often make the best memories.
I've been traveling the Gulf Coast practically my entire life.
From Mississippi to Alabama and right on into the Florida Panhandle, I've seen my fair share of sandy beaches, tourist traps, and overpriced condos with nautical decor.
But Pensacola?
Pensacola has always been a little different.
There's a certain flair of weirdness about this Florida beach town. Not the kind of weirdness that makes you lock your car doors and reconsider your life choices.
The good kind.
The kind that reminds me of hanging out with a hippie.
You're comfortable. You're happy. Everyone seems perfectly content with their own version of normal.
And you're just sitting there, slightly fascinated by the whole lifestyle.
There are real small-town surfers, little Toyota trucks cruising the streets, and enough saltwater-soaked personality to remind you that not every beach town has been completely polished for tourists.
Pensacola has managed to hold on to something that a lot of popular vacation destinations seem to lose.
Its personality.
And perhaps that's why I keep coming back.
So Naturally, We Decided to Stay Somewhere Even Weirder.
For this particular mother-daughter getaway, Charley and I decided that a regular beach hotel simply wasn't going to do.
We wanted something different. Something with character. Something that felt a little more like an experience than just another place to sleep.
Enter:
A 1977 houseboat.
Yes, an actual houseboat.
And not one of those enormous floating mansions that looks like a waterfront condominium with a propeller.
This was a cozy, wonderfully quirky, vintage houseboat tucked away on the water in Pensacola, Florida.
The kind of place that makes you wonder whether you should unpack your suitcase or start referring to yourself as Captain.
We found it on Airbnb, and it was exactly the kind of unique vacation rental experience I love discovering along the Southern coast.
If you're looking for unique Airbnbs in Pensacola, Florida , this is one worth taking a look at.
Two Girls, One Houseboat, and a Whole Lot of Character
Our Airbnb host mentioned that she mostly welcomed couples aboard the houseboat.
Apparently, Charley and I were her first mother-daughter duo.
Well, there's a first time for everything.
And as it turns out, a mother and daughter can have just as much fun aboard a romantic little houseboat as anybody else.
We weren't there for candlelit dinners or some grand romantic weekend on the water.
We were there to hang out, explore Pensacola, and enjoy something a little different.
And that's exactly what we did.
Welcome to the Captain's Quarters
Now, I've stayed in a lot of vacation rentals over the years.
But there's something particularly charming about walking into a 1977 houseboat and discovering that it's actually... cozy.
Not just tolerably cozy.
Really cozy.
The living room had that wonderfully lived-in nautical character that made the whole experience feel like something straight out of an Outer Banks dream.
Not the multimillion-dollar beachfront mansion version.
The version where the interesting people live.
We had Netflix on the television, a comfortable living room, and everything we needed for a relaxing evening.
And when it was finally time to crawl into bed?
We slept like absolute dreams.
Which is funny, considering we were sleeping somewhere that technically floats.
But Does It Have a REAL Refrigerator?
Now, y'all know I have certain standards when it comes to vacation accommodations.
And one of them is a REAL refrigerator.
Not one of those tiny hotel refrigerators that can barely accommodate a bottle of water and half a leftover sandwich.
I want a refrigerator.
An actual refrigerator.
With a freezer.
And would you believe that this charming little 1977 houseboat had a full-size refrigerator AND freezer?
Some women require oceanfront balconies and luxury bathrobes.
I require adequate refrigeration.
A girl needs somewhere to put her groceries, her leftovers, and the questionable number of snacks she packed for a two-night getaway.
And this floating piece of history delivered.
The Best Part Wasn't Even Inside
As much as we loved the cozy living room, some of our favorite moments happened outside.
We spent our evenings hanging out on the dock, watching the water, and enjoying that peaceful feeling that comes with being somewhere just a little removed from everything else.
There was also the upper deck of the houseboat, which became one of our favorite spots to hang out.
There's something about sitting on the water that makes ordinary things feel a little more special.
A quiet morning. A beautiful sky. A conversation with your daughter.
Sometimes those are the moments that make a trip memorable.
And Then There Were the Welcoming Committee Members
Now, no Southern getaway would be complete without making a few new friends.
And ours happened to have four legs.
The neighbors' dogs became our unofficial welcoming committee, stopping by to greet us during our stay.
And honestly?
Any vacation rental that comes with friendly neighborhood dogs already has a special place in my heart.
It's those little unexpected moments that make staying in unique Airbnbs so much fun.
A hotel might leave you a complimentary bottle of water.
But a houseboat might come with a new furry friend.
And I know which one I'm more likely to remember.

Why We Love Finding Unique Airbnbs When We Travel
One of the things I love most about traveling is discovering places that have their own personality.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with a beautiful hotel.
But sometimes I want something that feels a little less predictable.
A historic home. A quirky cabin. A cottage tucked away in the woods.
Or apparently, a 1977 houseboat.
When you're looking for unique places to stay in Pensacola or anywhere along the Gulf Coast, I always recommend looking beyond the traditional hotel options.
Sometimes the most memorable accommodations are the ones you never would have thought to search for.
The Bittersweet Business of Checking Out
Eventually, of course, every good getaway comes to an end.
And there we were, packing up our belongings, gathering our luggage, and preparing to leave our floating little home behind.
And I couldn't help but think about how much fun we'd had doing something so simple.
We didn't need an elaborate itinerary.
We didn't need a luxury resort.
We just needed somewhere interesting to stay and a little time together.
So, Is Pensacola Still Cool?
Absolutely.
I've been coming to Pensacola for years, and it still has that wonderfully laid-back personality I've always loved.
The surfers. The quirky little neighborhoods. The old Florida charm.
And apparently, a 1977 houseboat with a full-size refrigerator and a couple of friendly dock dogs.
I couldn't help but wonder:
In a world where every vacation destination seems determined to become the next big thing, is the coolest place actually the one that never tried?
Maybe that's why Pensacola keeps drawing me back.
It doesn't need to reinvent itself.
It just needs to keep being Pensacola.
