The Dome-Shaped House on David Drive: A Louisiana Real Estate Love Story
A love story involving one very unique Prairieville, Louisiana home, a loft, a pond, a long goodbye... and one unforgettable bathtub.
Some listings are business.
You take the photos. You put the house on the market. You negotiate the contract. You make it to closing.
And then there are the listings you have a relationship with.
The dome-shaped house on David Drive in Prairieville, Louisiana was one of those.
From the first time I saw her, I loved her.
She was different. A little quirky. Very sure of herself. And somehow shaped almost exactly like what your brain imagines when somebody says the word home.
So naturally, she became my home-shaped house.
And in a sea of Louisiana homes that can sometimes start to look a little too much alike, this one had absolutely no interest in blending in.
She Was Close to Everything... But Didn't Feel Like It
One of my favorite things about this Prairieville, Louisiana property was where it was hiding.
The house was located just off popular Hwy 42, putting you close to the places people actually need to get to in Prairieville, but once you pulled onto the property, it was a completely different feeling.
Tucked away on a corner lot, surrounded by mature trees and with its own pond, it somehow felt like you were miles away.
Convenient when you wanted to leave.
Secluded enough that you didn't particularly want to.
And Then You Walked Inside...
There was the loft.
That staircase.
Those ceilings.
And a living room that immediately made me think about movie nights.
Not staged-house movie nights where everyone sits politely on coordinating furniture.
I mean blankets everywhere. Popcorn. Somebody claiming the best spot on the sofa. Somebody else falling asleep twenty minutes into the movie and then insisting they were awake the entire time.
It was one of those rooms that made you start imagining how you would live there before you had even finished touring the house.
Somewhere around this point, my real estate brain stopped objectively touring a Louisiana property.
I liked her.
A lot.
But Then There Was the Bathtub.
Oh. That bathtub.
Real estate photography can be deceptive.
Wide-angle lenses have convinced generations of homebuyers that bedrooms are ballrooms and ordinary bathtubs are practically swimming pools.
So there was really only one responsible way to investigate this one.
I got in.
I'm 5'9".
I fit.
These are the hard-hitting details about Prairieville, Louisiana real estate you simply aren't going to get from the MLS.
And Then, Like Most Relationships, Things Got Complicated.
She didn't stay single for long.
The dome-shaped house on David Drive was snatched up pretty quickly after hitting the Prairieville, Louisiana real estate market.
But getting under contract and getting married are two very different things.
And closing?
Closing took a while.
This wasn't a house that had been passed from owner to owner over the years. This Louisiana home had been built and sold by its original owner.
There was history here.
So we worked through the closing process.
We waited.
We worked through a little more.
We waited some more.
And eventually, after spending her entire life with the person who built her, my home-shaped friend was ready for her second marriage.
Her Second Marriage
And somehow, she found someone who understood her.
Someone who appreciated what made her different rather than wanting her to look like every other house.
The shape.
The loft.
The staircase.
The bathtub.
And that unusually large Prairieville, Louisiana lot with its own pond.
That's the thing about this property. You could be just off Hwy 42 and still stand outside among the trees, look toward the water and feel like you had escaped much farther away.
Coffee in the morning.
A chair by the pond.
Maybe a book you swear you're finally going to finish.
And absolutely no desire to check your email.
In the end, this one-of-a-kind Prairieville home sold for nearly market price.
And I think there's something worth remembering about that.
Sometimes the unusual house isn't the house you have to explain away.
Sometimes you just have to find the person who thinks the unusual parts are the best parts.
And I Couldn't Help But Wonder...
Maybe selling a house isn't always about convincing someone that a property is perfect.
Maybe it's about finding the person who thinks its peculiarities are the reason it's perfect for them.
The unusual shape.
The loft.
The giant bathtub.
The corner lot.
The pond.
The things that make one buyer say, "Well, that's different."
And another one say, "That's the one."
And isn't that basically how most good relationships begin?
One Last Thing...
After all that time together, there was one part of the story I actually missed.
I didn't even get to go to the closing.
I didn't get to sit there and watch my dome-shaped friend officially pass from the person who built her into the hands of the person beginning her next chapter.
Which, after everything we'd been through together, felt a little like missing a friend's wedding.
But maybe that's okay.
Because I know she's in good hands.
Somewhere just off Hwy 42 in Prairieville, Louisiana, she's still sitting on that big corner lot beside her pond.
Still wonderfully different.
Still shaped like home.
And now, officially, in her second marriage.
I hope they're very happy together.
